While there are topics and issues that resonate with the cardiopulmonary rehab community as a whole, the group is vast and each program experiences different challenges. This roundtable is an opportunity to hear from leaders throughout the country, offering perspectives on what challenges are being faced in their area and how they are being resolved. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panel for their collective insights.

Join Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System for a culinary journey to 2 of the world’s 5 “Blue Zones.” These communities have the highest number of 100+ year-olds living full, functional lives. What do they have in common, and how can we create a similar environment?

The Benefits of Volunteers and Student Interns to your Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Volunteers and students can provide a valuable asset to your program in a variety of ways. These committed individuals can assist staff and patients by providing high quality, cost-efficient care and support to your patients, staff and program. 

Learning Objectives: 

- Attendees will learn how to recruit and utilize volunteers for your program needs, through your hospital's volunteer program.
- Attendees will explore potential ways volunteers can enhance and aid in daily duties. 
- Attendees will learn how to collaborate with universities to offer student internships. 
- Attendees will identify the value and positive results of coaching a student.

Program Fundamentals: Psychosocial Assessment and Management of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Patient 

Speakers: Dana Wills, MS, EP, CCRP

Psychosocial management is identified as a core component of outpatient Phase-II cardiac rehabilitation by the AACVPR, and is show to contribute to the effectiveness of the comprehensive cardiac rehab program. However,  implementation of psychosocial assessments and interventions are not always consistent. We will discuss why is it important to identify psychosocial dysfunction in CR patients, how it should be assessed, and what should be done when a problem is identified. Topics will include psychosocial assessment, providing interventions, measuring outcomes, and care coordination.

Knight

Amy Knight, PhD, ABPP

Dr. Knight serves as the Division Director of Rehabilitation Psychology at Spain Rehabilitation Center (SRC). Dr. Knight received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She completed an internship in behavioral medicine at West Virginia University and a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology at UAB in the Department of Neurology.
Dr. Knight is Board Certified in the area of Clinical Neuropsychology. Dr. Knight works with patients on the SRC Stroke Service and provides a continuum of care in the multidisciplinary outpatient Stroke Clinic with PM&R and Neurology, and for assessments pertaining to capacity for return to work or driving post-discharge. She also conducts neuropsychological evaluations for patients with acquired or degenerative neurological conditions. Dr. Knight offers psychotherapy to support coping and adjustment to neurological disability. Dr. Knight’s research has focused on the neurobiology of acute medical trauma and the validity of neuropsychological evaluation in driving capacity. Dr. Knight’s current research protocol investigates the utility of early cognitive capacity assessments in predicting return to driving following stroke. She is collaborating with Dr. Despina Stavrinos, Director of the UAB Translational Research for Injury Prevention Laboratory to collect performance data from a full-scale driving simulator. Dr. Knight also maintains an IRB for capturing data from all clinical driving evaluations for future research projects. Ongoing publications are now in preparation from prior work investigating the human neurobiological response to stress following acute trauma exposure with functional neuroimaging (fMRI). Additional projects are underway.

Shelley McCabe, BA, RCEP, CCRP, FAACVPR

Shelley McCabe has been employed by Pulse Heart Institute with MultiCare Health System in Cardiopulmonary Rehab for the last 25 years. She was a Clinical Exercise Physiologist for over 20 years and then transitioned solely to management, overseeing 4 of the 7 Cardiopulmonary Rehab locations within Pulse. Shelley volunteered on the board of directors for her local AACVPR Affiliate, NWCVPR. and now serves on various committees for AACVPR. Shelley believes in building a network of professionals from around the country with which to build relationships and collectively grow and improve programs. In her words, "Our patients deserve the best we can offer to improve their lives, and learning from each other is a great way to improve our practices".

Kate Traynor, RN, MS, FAACVPR 

Kate has a broad background in clinical nursing with specific training and expertise in cardiac rehabilitation. In her 30 years of working in the field of cardiac rehabilitation, she has extensive experience as a clinician in a multidisciplinary team model for cardiac rehabilitation as well as leadership roles in the field of cardiac rehabilitation. She was selected as a Master of the AACVPR in 2018. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Center, leading 2 CR Programs, an AACVPR certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and the MGH Intensive Cardiac Rehab Program, Benson Henry Model. Both are comprehensive multidisciplinary programs that incorporate a strong psychosocial component. Her leadership in the field of cardiac rehabilitation extends to a national level where she is a Past President for AACVPR. Her efforts at the national level have focused on education of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation professionals, advocacy, increasing referral, enrollment and participation in cardiac rehab, and value based care initiatives. In her home state of Massachusetts, she has served as President of the MACVPR and has received the MACVPR Distinguished Service Award. She received her BSN from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and her MSN from Boston College. She has strong Boston Irish roots and is an avid Boston sports fan! From among all her varied roles, her most cherished are that of wife and mother. She has been married to Mike for 37 years and has 2 awesome kids- Elizabeth and Christopher.

Victoria A. Yandle MSN, RN, CCRP

Victoria Yandle felt a calling for nursing from an early age. After receiving her degree from Orangeburg School of Nursing, she worked as a staff nurse in the coronary care unit. In 1990, she began working with patients in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. After 36 years, Victoria continues to find herself devoted to nursing and is in the process of finishing the DNP Nurse Executive Leadership program at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Victoria is the recipient of the Palmetto Gold Award for Nursing, Distinguished Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Professional Award, SCACVPR Outstanding Service Award and Rotarian Award. She has been a board member of the SCACVPR since 1996 and has held multiple offices within the organization, including President. In addition to a rewarding career in nursing, she is also involved in volunteering and charities throughout the region.

Kerri Lindberg Stewart, RD, LD

Kerri Stewart grew up in the mountains of Middletown, Maryland. She attended college at University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. Kerri’s next move was to Columbia, SC to complete a dietetic internship through DHEC. In Columbia, she got the opportunity to work at Lexington Medical Center to gain experience in the clinical, food service, and outpatient fields. It was there she found her passion for heart health and has always preached prevention through use of “food as medicine.” She believes food is meant to be fun, stress-free, and nourishing. Kerri began at USC in research and has now been at Spartanburg Regional in the Heart Resource Center for over 10 years. In her free time, Kerri is busy following around her 1-year-old, hiking, and following Washington Sports teams.

Michael Dunlap ACSM EP/PD, FAACVPR

Michael Dunlap is the Manager of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at CarolinaEast Health System. He served as the Past President of the Upper Plains Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Association and North Carolina Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Association.

 

Kelly Forrest

Kelly Forrest, RN II

Kelly has been a nurse for 30 years, 10 of which has been cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Previously, her nursing career was spent helping patients patients in the Cardiovascular Surgical IMC/ICU  program at CarolinaEast Medical Center.  Kelly is currently the President of NCCRA and has enjoyed her position on the board for the past six years.

Alan Snow, MBA & Joyce Snow

Alan Snow, MBA: Alan is retired from Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies/Philips Medical Systems where he was the Training and Education Manager, with an emphasis on leadership and management development.  Alan is also an adjunct faculty member Merrimack College.  Currently, Alan is a  CarolinaEast Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program volunteer, preceded by CABG and completion of the CarolinaEast CPR program.

Joyce Snow: Joyce is currently a volunteer with the CarolinaEast Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program; alongside her husband Alan. She retired after a rewarding career as a Training and Education Program Manager with Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies Medical Products Group.

 

Wills

Dana Wills, MS, EP, CCRP

Dana Wills worked for over 20 years in the Cardiac Rehab setting. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology and Athletic Training from Eastern Kentucky University. She completed her Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from Morehead State University.  Dana was the director at Winona Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, IN from 1998-2001, then moved back to Kentucky to be an EP at Baptist Health Richmond. She is an AACVPR Certified Cardiac Rehab Professional (CCRP) and a past President of the Kentucky Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Association (KCRA). Dana is currently the Medical Sales Coordinator for ScottCare Cardiovascular Solutions.
